Terms of Use

These Terms govern your use of the KR Maps Journeys mobile application ("the App") operated by KR Maps ("we," "us," "our"). By downloading, installing, or using the App, you agree to these Terms.

1. About the App

KR Maps Journeys is a companion app for KR Maps physical wall maps. The App lets you scan your physical wall map to create digital pins, import photos from your device to create journeys tied to those pins, view your travel history and statistics, and maintain a list of future destinations. The App is free to use; ordering a printed photo book of a journey is an optional paid feature (see "Printed Book Orders" below).

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use the App. If you are under 18, you confirm that a parent or guardian has reviewed and agreed to these Terms on your behalf. To place an order for a printed book you must be able to enter into a purchase under applicable law — generally, you must be 18 or older, or have a parent or guardian place the order for you.

3. Account & QR Code Activation

The App does not require an account or login. Certain features are activated by scanning a QR code included with your KR Maps physical product. QR-code activation is tied to the specific map product you purchased and is intended for personal use by the purchaser. You may not share, resell, or publicly distribute activation links or QR codes.

4. Your Content

"Your Content" means the photos, journal notes, captions, bucket-list entries, and any other material you create or import into the App.

  • Ownership. You retain full ownership of Your Content. We do not claim any rights to your photos, writing, or personal data.
  • On-device storage. Your Content is stored locally on your device. We do not upload, access, or store your personal photos on our servers, except for the scan flows and printed-book orders described in our Privacy Policy.
  • Responsibility. You are solely responsible for Your Content and for ensuring you have the right to use any photos or materials you import.

5. Optional Data Sharing

Certain features transmit limited data to external services. See our Privacy Policy for the complete list. The flows that send personal data off-device are:

  • Wall-map and close-up scans — the captured image is routed through our backend proxy to our pin-detection service for pin detection. You will be asked for explicit consent before the first wall-map scan upload.
  • Printed book creation — if you choose to build a printed book, your selected photos are uploaded to our book-building service (held in storage we operate) so you can finish the design in our web book studio; if you place an order, the finished book is sent to our print partner Prodigi to produce and ship it. You will be asked for explicit consent before any photos are uploaded.
  • Trip classification — sample GPS coordinates from a trip are sent to Mapbox's Tilequery API.
  • Historical weather — GPS coordinates and date ranges are sent to Open-Meteo.
  • Place search — your search query (and optional GPS bias) is sent to Google Places.

6. Printed Book Orders

The App lets you build and order a printed photo book made from one of your journeys. Books are produced and shipped by our print partner, Prodigi; KR Maps is the seller. These terms apply to any order you place:

  • Made to order. Each book is custom-printed from the content you choose. You can preview your book in the App before ordering — please review it carefully, because production begins from exactly what you submit.
  • Pricing & payment. The price shown at checkout includes printing, shipping, and any applicable tax, and is collected through our checkout provider. Prices may change over time, but the price shown to you at checkout is the price for that order.
  • Cancellation. You may cancel an order before it enters production. Once a book has gone to production it can no longer be changed or cancelled.
  • Refunds & replacements. Because each book is custom-made for you, orders are not returnable or refundable for a change of mind, or for errors in the content you approved (for example a typo, a photo you later wish you had cropped differently, or the wrong photo selected). However, if your book arrives with a manufacturing defect, shipping damage, or does not match the order you placed, contact us within 30 days of delivery with a photo of the problem and we will replace it at no cost or refund it.
  • Delivery. Production and delivery times shown are estimates, not guarantees, and depend on the printer and carrier. We are not responsible for carrier delays; lost shipments are handled case-by-case, typically with a reprint or refund.
  • Your content & rights. You are responsible for the photos and text in your book and confirm you have the right to print them. Do not order books containing content that is unlawful or infringes someone else's rights.
  • Personal use. Printed books are for your personal use. Map imagery printed in a book remains subject to the terms of our map-data providers.

7. Third-Party Services

The App relies on several third-party services to operate:

  • Apple/Google location services — for converting coordinates into place names (reverse geocoding)
  • Our pin-detection service, using our own computer-vision pipeline (via our backend proxy) — for pin detection
  • Prodigi — for printing and shipping books you order
  • Cloudflare R2 — temporary storage we operate that holds a book's print file so the printer can retrieve it; the file is removed after the order is fulfilled
  • Mapbox — for trip-type classification and map tiles
  • OpenStreetMap (via CartoCDN) — for map tiles
  • Open-Meteo — for historical weather data
  • Google Places (via our backend proxy) — for place autocomplete
  • Google Fonts — for typography at runtime
  • Firebase Crashlytics — for anonymous crash and error reports

These services have their own terms and privacy policies. We encourage you to review them.

8. Intellectual Property

  • Our IP. The App, including its design, code, map imagery, graphics, and branding, is owned by KR Maps and protected by intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, distribute, or reverse-engineer the App.
  • Map data. Map tiles and geographic data displayed in the App, and reproduced in any printed book you order, are provided under licenses from our map-data providers and are for your personal use only. You may not extract, resell, or redistribute the map imagery itself.

9. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Use the App for any unlawful purpose
  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or extract the source code of the App
  • Interfere with or disrupt the App's services or servers
  • Share, resell, or redistribute QR-code activation links
  • Use automated tools or scripts to access the App or its services

10. Disclaimers

  • The App is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied.
  • We do not guarantee the accuracy of geographic data, place names, country/state assignments, or travel statistics displayed in the App.
  • We are not responsible for any loss of data stored locally on your device. We recommend maintaining your own photo backups.
  • Computer-vision scan results may not always be perfectly accurate. You can review and correct any detected pins or labels before saving.
  • Printed books are physical products: colors, brightness, and trimming may vary slightly from what you see on screen, as is normal for printing.

11. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, KR Maps shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the App, including but not limited to loss of data, loss of content, or interruption of service. For any printed book order, our total liability is limited to the amount you paid for that order.

12. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above. Your continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

13. Termination

We reserve the right to suspend or discontinue the App or any of its features at any time without notice. You may stop using the App at any time by uninstalling it.

14. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States. Any disputes arising from these Terms or your use of the App shall be resolved in accordance with applicable law.
