Where most push pin maps fall apart
Five recurring problems show up in reviews of cheaper push pin maps. We built ours specifically to solve each one.
1. Pins don't grip
A lot of push pin map sellers ship just a stretched canvas with nothing behind it. Pins push through the fabric and barely hang on, and you feel the canvas flex against your fingers every time you put one in. The whole thing feels cheap because you're really just pushing pins into stretched cloth.
The mass-produced versions go the other direction. Thin foam that bends when you push, or dense backing pins won't stay in. Either way, the map looks great empty and frustrates you the moment you try to use it.
2. The print fades within a year or two
Mass-produced maps are printed with standard inkjet inks that aren't built for long-term display. Indoor light fades the colors within a year or two, and once a few pins have come and gone, the holes show. There's usually no warranty backing it up either. 3. Cork looks dated
Cork was the original push pin solution, but the rough surface limits print detail. Fine text comes out blurry. Colors come out washed. The aesthetic ends up looking like a classroom bulletin board.

About our projection (Patterson, closer to Equal Earth)
This is the one design choice nobody talks about, and the one we get the most thank-you emails about. Our world maps use the Patterson projection.
Mercator (the projection on most world maps) was built in the 1500s for ocean navigation. It preserves shape locally but inflates everything near the poles. That's why Greenland ends up looking the size of Africa on most maps even though Africa is about 14× larger. Antarctica looks like an endless continent. Russia stretches across the top half of the world.
In 2026, more individuals and organizations (schools, publishers, news outlets) are moving toward Equal Earth and similar area-accurate projections, because how a map represents the world shapes how people perceive the world.
Patterson is a compromise projection without polar inflation, similar to Equal Earth in how it represents continent size. Africa looks like Africa. Greenland looks like Greenland. The landmasses on your wall match the planet they came from. Most customers don't notice consciously. They just say it "feels right."
If accuracy matters more than aesthetics for you, we also offer the same geography in our Equal Earth projection map, which uses true equal-area continent sizes. The KR Maps Journeys app (free, launching July 2026) lets you scan your physical wall map with your phone. The app finds your pins, matches them to your existing travel photos, and builds a digital version where every pin opens a journey: your photos, your route, your memories.
It's completely optional. The map works perfectly without it. No subscription, no extra hardware. The matching happens through your phone camera and your existing photos, so regular pins work fine. What projection do KR Maps world maps use?
We use the Patterson projection. It's a compromise projection without polar inflation, similar to the Equal Earth projection in how it represents continent size. That's why Africa looks like Africa and Greenland looks like Greenland on our world maps. The Mercator projection found on most other world maps inflates anything near the poles, which is why Greenland appears the same size as Africa on those maps even though Africa is roughly 14× larger.
Canvas vs cork vs pinboard: which is best for push pins?
Canvas and pinboard both outperform cork on print quality and pin grip. Canvas is stretched over a 1¼″ wood frame with a hidden foamboard layer behind it, finished as wall art. Pinboard is matte paper on 3/16″ foamboard with bevel-cut edges and hanging tabs, ready to hang or drop into any standard frame later. Cork holds pins but limits print resolution.
